The Citadelle Laferrière is a mountaintop fortress, located on the northern coast of Haiti – on the top of mountain Bonnet a L’Eveque. Depicted on local currency, stamps and postcards, this amazing structure has become the symbol of Haiti’s power and independence. It was built in the beginning of the 19th century by one of the leaders of Haiti’s slave revolution. The Citadelle Laferrière is also known simply as the Citadelle or as Citadelle Henri Christophe in the honor of its creator.

OMG! What a View!

5.0/ 5

This place will take your breath away. It is just magical!  We rode a mule all the way to the top. It would be a great workout if you just want it, however, we were not about that life. When we finally reached the top, we were greeted by this humongous magical castle-like structure.  We had trouble trying to understand how it possibly was built with bleeding hands. The history behind it is so historical, it adds to the Haitian Revolution, bringing it back to life and reliving that spirit of passion for freedom, pride, and dignity.  Haiti was a true force to be reckoned with, and you will see that here. There were cannons and cannon balls aligned all around the fortress overlooking the island. The fortress sits so high on the mountain that you can literally almost reach out and touch a cloud. The view is gorgeous and you just literally feel like you are on top of the world.  It is such a little gem. I was surprised at the lack of tourism to this place, because it was well worth the visit.
